What is a Gomer?
A Gomer is a member of Third Day’s ever-growing family of fans. The idea started on Third Day’s message boards, on May 8, 2001. The people that hang out on the boards have really become a family, meeting most everyday to chat and have fun together. We wanted to have a name to identify ourselves and to bond us together. And it has worked. We are no longer simply individual fans of this band called Third Day. We are Gomers. We are a family.
If you’d like to be part of our Gomer family, we’d love to have you join us!
How do I become a Gomer?
The way to becoming a Gomer has changed many times over the years. We used to have a list we kept on the message boards. When the family began to grow so fast we could no longer keep up with it by hand, we became automated. We had an official list and page to go to to sign up. Sadly, a couple of years ago that list was accidentally deleted and never recovered. It had over 30,000 Gomers on it!
Now all you need to do to join our Gomer family is to love Third Day and say you are a Gomer! That's it! No need to sign up, or anything!
You can join the other Gomers on the boards and on Twitter by following us at www.Twitter.com/3DGomers
What do Gomers do?
Gomers support Third Day and their ministry. We meet before the concerts to pray for the band, the audience, the crew, and for it all to go God's way. We pray for them, their ministry, and their families the rest of the year as well. We also support the band by telling others how awesome their music is, and thereby helping Third Day to tell people about God and His amazing love.
We love to have fun together. Since it started on the Third Day message boards, and since Gomers are spread out all over the world, the message boards are our primary meeting place. There we talk about anything and everything. There are forums to talk about Third Day and their music. In the Spiritual forums you can share prayer and discuss the Word of God. The “Musicians' & Artists Corner” is the place to talk about playing music, and to share the poems, songs, and stories you’ve written. The “Entertainment Reviews” forum is to discuss books, movies, bands, and whatever you’d like, to get other’s opinions of them. We have a tech forum to share your knowledge or ask for help. The “Gomersville” forum, inside the “3D Discussion” forum, is the place to to find other Gomers in your area. Third Day's tour forum, "On the Road Again" is the place to plan to gather with other Gomers at the concerts. We have a sports forum, too. And “The Zone” is where we talk about everything under the sun. You can make a lot of new Christian friends on the Third Day message boards. It is our home on the web.
Gomers get together off the internet, too. We go to concerts together and do fun stuff like play laser tag, go to baseball games, go out to dinner, or anything else we can think of. We also do charity and service projects along side the members of Third Day. The more we get together, the more we want to get together!
What is a Gomer name?
As a family, Gomer is our last name. When this started, Razor, one of the board members thought it would be fun if each person made up a first name to go with “Gomer.” For instance, my name is Mama Gomer. I chose it originally because “Mama” is the name of a Third Day song, and because I wanted a name to reflect my love for my two sons. It turned out to be a great name for me, as mama of all the Gomers.
Your Gomer name can be anything you want. And you can change it anytime you want. You also put your Gomer name on your Gomer shirt. Choose a positive, fun name. You can use your nickname, or make up a name that speaks about your faith, hobbies, or anything else you’d like.
Where did the name “Gomer” come from?
The name Gomer comes from the Third Day song “Gomer’s Theme” on the Conspiracy #5 CD. But if you dig deeper, and read the book of Hosea in the Bible, you will see that Gomer was a person who walked away from love to go her own way. Her husband loved her so much that he let her go. When the time was right, he bought her out of slavery, cleaned her up, and took her on a honeymoon. Then he took her home. He showed her unconditional love. This story is an example of God’s love for us. We were lost in sin, but God bought us back with the blood of His Son, Jesus. He cleans us up, and brings us close to Himself, and one day, He will take us home to live with Him forever. He shows us unconditional love. Furthermore, the name Gomer means complete, as we are complete in Christ.
I’m too old to be a Gomer. I’m ___.
Don’t let age hold you back! We have Gomers of every age, from newborns to people in their 80’s, and probably older! I'd say the average Gomer is somewhere around 23, which means many, many are older!
Who has become a Gomer already?
There are thousands of Gomers, and the family grows daily. Some of the more famous Gomers are the members of Third Day: Mac (Mac Gomer) Powell, Mark (Bedhead Gomer) Lee, Tai (Big Bottom Gomer) Anderson, David (Doyle Gomer) Carr, and Brad (Loser Gomer) Avery. There are many other celebrities in Christian music that are Gomers including Newsboy Paul (PC Gomer) Colman, Bebo (Rae Rae Gomer) Norman, and Jeremy (RunningWithJoy Gomer ) Camp. Actor Stephen Baldwin is Livin' It Gomer!
Do I need to buy an official orange Gomer shirt?
You don't really need a shirt, but I'm sure you'll want one. The shirts enable us to recognize each other when we meet in person. The Gomer shirts are orange so that we can easily spot each other at concerts. The other reason they are orange is so that Third Day can spot us from the stage and know we are there supporting them. They do work very well! (The shirt color, given to us by Third Day, is what has inspired us to choose orange as the official Gomer color.)
How do I buy a Gomer shirt?
Please be advised that the Gomer shirts will not be available for purchase at the shows. You can only purchase them at the online store. If there are none in the store, we are working on getting them restocked.
How do I put my Gomer name on my shirt?
The Gomer shirts say "Property of ________ Gomer" on them. The idea is to write your Gomer name on the blank. The blank is a white, rubberized, rectangle. You can use a Sharpie marker to write your Gomer name right on it. Sharpies come in all colors now, so you can get pretty creative with it. The name will fade a bit, after a couple of washings. If yours fades, just retrace it with your Sharpie.
Some people have gotten pretty crafty in putting their Gomer names onto their shirts. Some have used shirt paints, some have used sew on letters, and some have taken the shirt to a monogram shop to have their name stitched on. Use your imagination! Show off your creativity!
Where can I get other Gomer merchandise?
I have set up a Gomer store. There are lots of different things at The Blue Gomer Store and The Orange Gomer Store. Each store has different stuff, so be sure to check them both out.
Isn’t this obsession with Third Day sort of idol worship?
I don’t think that any Gomer is "obsessed" with Third Day. We joke and say we are addicted to Third Day, but we are not serious. I wouldn't say that anyone "idolizes" Third Day, especially since the band, and the Bible, say it's wrong. No one is worshiping them (we don’t allow any such talk on the message boards), or putting them where we should have Jesus placed in our lives. We just love their music. It ministers to us and brings us closer to our Heavenly Father.
What else do I need to know?
Look around this site. There’s lots more to discover. The Gomertopia site will give you more information, as will the Third Day site, and the Third Day message boards. We are growing and doing more all the time. Join the family and join the fun!
It looks like the Gomer Shirt is no longer available on the Third Day site. Where do I get one?
